2003 Akamai Intern ProfilesRichard Cariens, Jr.

Richard is a junior at Maui Community College and is interested in
Space research. He is intrigued by the possibility of the design and
colonization of space. Richard grew up in the Midwest, Philippines
and Japan. For the last four years he has lived on Maui and worked
to save money to go back to school. He has a seven year old son. (Top) |

Nancy is a junior in college and is interested in applying her knowledge
of computer science to physics. She enjoys being challenged in creating
applications of programming to fit the needs of a project. After many
years working as a secretary for a construction firm she returned to
school to pursue a different career. She has two children. (Top) |
Maui Community College
Mark is a sophomore at Maui Community College and is interested in
all aspects of computers including electronic engineering, computer
engineering, programming and software (graphics and layout). He would
like a career as an engineer or graphic artist. Mark has been working
as a graphic designer for 5 years to fund his education. (Top) |
Maui Community College
Thomas will be graduating from Maui Community College with two Associate
of Science degrees from the Electronic and Computer Engineering Program.
He will be the first in his family to graduate from college with any
type of degree. He would like to be part of the technical workforce
in Hawaii; working with electronics, adaptive optics or remote sensing
in either private or government sectors. He is presently changing careers
from the construction industry to a technical field. Thomas is married
and has a 3 year old daughter. (Top) |
James “B.J.” Hoopii Jr., Institute for Astronomy B.J. is currently pursuing an Associate in Applied Science degree
at Maui Community College. His major is Electronic and Computer Engineering
Technology. In the future he plans to get a Master’s degree in
Computer Science. He has have chosen computers as his career goal because
he has had a knack for fixing electronics since he was 9 years old.

Kawailehua Kuluhiwa was born and raised in Kihei, Maui. She graduated from Maui Community College in the Spring of 2003 with an A.A. degree and transferred to University of Hawaii at Hilo. She completed her internship with the Akamai program in the summer of 2003 at W.M. Keck Observatory. Currently, she is completing her B.S. degree in astronomy at the UH Hilo. Recently Kawai traveled to UC Santa Cruz for the CfAO’s Saturday Open Lab so she could learn more about graduate school opportunities. She hopes to someday return home to establish employment on the observatories of Maui or Hawaii and to work closely with other astronomers. (Top) |
Jennifer Milliet, Akimeka
Jennifer is attending Maui Community College and is also a distance
learning student through the University of Hawaii at Hilo. She is majoring
in Computer Science. Jennifer is interested in a career in game software
development but is open to other possibilities. She enjoys hiking and
going to beach. Jennifer is married and has a daughter. (Top) |

Regi will graduate this summer with an Associate of Science degree
in Computer Engineering Technology and a second degree in Electronic
Engineering. He is the first person in his family to go to college.
Regi is interested in physics and computer science and would like to
become a computer engineer in Maui or Ohau. He would like to work in
a field that specializes in troubleshooting high-end computers. While
he was growing up he was interested in diving, fishing, math and science. (Top) |

Charles will be graduating from Maui Community College in December
of 2003 with an Associate of Science degree. His major is Electrical
Engineering. Electonics has always amazed Charles. After graduating
he plans to get a job in Maui as an electonic technician. Charles has
lived in Maui his entire life and enjoys fishing, camping, drag racing,
fixing cars and building models. (Top) |
| Jennifer has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Washington
State University. She is currently fulfilling requirements to enter the
Master of Science in Information and Computer Science program at Univeristy
of Hawaii at Manoa. She is interested in using computer science in research
applications. Specifically, she is looking to write programs that either
run or simulate actual scientific experiments. Jennifer lives on the
island of Maui and is married. (Top) |
Ivan Won, Boeing
Ivan will receive an Associate of Science degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering Technology from Maui Community College. He would like to work in either the electronic or computer field. Ivan was born and raised on the island of Oahu and moved to Maui in 1996. (Top) |
