The Center for Adaptive Optics (CfAO)
has developed a number of new educational activities in Hawaii aimed
at increasing the involvement of local college students in astronomy
and observatory work. Undergraduate research experiences are at the heart
of these activities; however, the CfAO internship model is intentionally
designed to inform the community and build partnerships, creating a foundation
for more significant efforts and outcomes. This talk will outline successful
activities on the island of Maui, the proposed site for the Advanced
Technology Solar Telescope (ATST), and a new initiative that will partner
Mauna Kea observatories and the CfAO to significantly involve local college
students in summer research opportunities. |
