This is what can be done with the ophthalmoscope in Rochester.
The uncompensated image represents one of the best images of photoreceptor array obtainable without the use of adaptive optics. Some evidence of a resolved pr array can be seen.
The image on the right shows the same retinal location after an adaptive correction. This images represent one of the best adaptively corrected images to date. The contrast is much greater and nearly all individual photoreceptors are resolved.
The dark line going across the center of the the image is a blood vessel that is out of focus since it lies anterior to the photoreceptor layer. It is relatively transparent at 550 nm.
